Episode 18 – Understanding Wildfire Risks and Insurance Changes

We’re excited to bring you another insightful episode of the “All Things Wildfire” podcast, where we explore the latest trends in wildfires and how to protect your property against this ever-growing threat. In our latest episode, we have a special guest, Mr. Mike Thayer, a prominent figure in both the insurance and wildfire worlds.

“NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist with eight years of performing wildfire hazard inspections for high net worth clients with AIG. Within this time I provided mitigation solutions to hundreds of homeowners. I was able to collaborate with a great team to provide wildfire mitigation CE training to hundreds of brokers and clients.

Previous to my insurance career, I worked as a Fuels Crew Lead in Jefferson County, Colorado, performing hazardous fuel mitigation with chainsaws, chippers and masticators. Our team responded to wildfires in Colorado and across the western states.”

With years of experience under his belt, Mike provides invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of wildfire risks and the recent changes in the insurance industry, particularly in California.

Here’s a glimpse of what we discuss in this episode:

The crucial importance of certifications like the NFPA’s Wildfire Mitigation Specialist. Recent announcements by Commissioner Lara regarding the urgent need for action to address wildfire risks.

The challenges faced by insurance carriers in securing rate increases and their role in managing wildfire risks. How reinsurance and catastrophe models play a pivotal role in assessing and mitigating wildfire risks.

The mandate requiring carriers to write 85% of their business in wildfire-prone areas.

Governor Newsom’s executive order to strengthen and stabilize California’s insurance marketplace. Practical wildfire risk mitigation recommendations for homeowners.

The emotional impact and stress on homeowners who experience wildfire damage.

We believe that this episode is not only informative but also essential for anyone living in wildfire-prone areas or concerned about the increasing wildfire risks in California.
